Live Stuff promises it won’t be anything pay-to-win, with the Battle Pass focused exclusively on cosmetics. It’s somewhat unclear what the long-term plans for Diablo 4 are here, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t get at least one Reaper of Souls-sized expansion here in addition to live content. Although Diablo 3 reported that theirs was the second expansion they killed and chopped to pieces, as did some of the new areas they randomly added, and the post-launch Necromancer class that didn’t come with significant new story content. Given that Diablo 2 had Lord of Destruction and Diablo 3 had Reaper of Souls, this is a pretty standard part of any Diablo lifecycle. Honestly, I’m pretty sure they both will. Although I know some players are already wishing they could abandon the live concept and go back to the larger expansions. It’s understandable, given that it’s going to take a huge effort to support Diablo 4 in a way that competes with other live games. I guess not until they remodel it ten years from now. Diablo 3 will essentially be in maintenance mode where you can still play it, but there won’t be any real new content to come. And that game will have its own seasons, which will be more robust than the Diablo 3 seasons, and include modern practices like the Battle Pass.Īll development is shifting to develop these new Diablo 4 seasons.

You can clearly know why this happens, because Diablo 4 launches in early June. After that, while there will still be seasons, Season 30 and beyond will mix and match cosmetics from older seasons, and no real new seasons will be developed from there.

After a decade of seasonal, live-ish content for Diablo 3, Season 29 will be the last official new season for the game. While I guess it’s not the biggest surprise, it’s now official.
